In modern town, big fires are rare. Safty regulations and strict rules for building materials prevent them. It was not always like this. In 1666 all of London burnt down in the Great Fire. In 1871, 1/3 of Chicago was obliterated. As long as construction in wood and cooking on open fire are standard practice, fire remains a permanent hazard. On 12 December 2023, disaster struck Happy Land again. 248 homes went up in flames. The fire brigade could only limit the spread of the big fire but not extinguish what already burned. The little huts people build in the slums are often the only asset they have. With no roof over their head and no other savings, they now need urgently help. Seven of our students in the Bless the Children program and in Don Bosco lost their homes. We help them with temporary accommodation and donate building materials to allow their partents to rebuild their homes. Of course we will insist on the use non-inflammable mateials to prevent future desasters. We will keep you updated on the progress
