For the homeless youth who had nothing before coming to St. Martin de Porres (SMDP), living in an environment where everything—food, shelter, education—is provided is nothing short of a miracle. One measure of how far SMDP’s residents are able to come is that a handful are now old enough—and healthy enough—to leave.
Come fall, four teenage boys from SMDP and its sister mission, Bethlehem House, will attend high school a few hours away from Bustos. To help ease that transition, the Swiss chapter of the John D.V. Salvador Foundation has voted to finance their first year’s living expenses. Annual extensions will be granted based on periodic assessments, which will also inform the future design of a comprehensive scholarship program.
